Jacuzzi Invention of Hydrotherapy History

No other hot tub company has a history as rich as Jacuzzi. Mainly because Jacuzzi are the original inventors of portable hydrotherapy. They haven’t stopped innovating and developing hydrotherapy since. Here is a snapshot of their story so far.

Seven brothers – pioneers in engineering

The Jacuzzi family made the trip from Italy to the United States of America in the early 1900’s. These seven brothers worked hard to make their mark on the aviation industry with the invention of the first enclosed-cabin monoplane.

Then they turned their attention to water systems and pumps for the Californian orange groves. In 1925, the brothers created the first submersible pump, completely revolutionising the agricultural industry.

Jacuzzi Timeline

The 1950’s: Hydraulics lead to hydrotherapy. Sadly one of the young Jacuzzi family members was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. Inspired by the desire to help him, the brothers designed an aerating pump which, when submerged in a bathtub, created pain-relieving hydrotherapy treatments. The J-300, a portable pump, became a celebrated invention of the era. With the power to transform an everyday bath into a relaxing, rejuvenation hydro therapeutic spa, the J-300 portable pump started a niche market.
The 1960’s: In 1968, third generation family member Roy Jacuzzi took the J-300 portable hydrotherapy pump and integrated it into a bath, creating the first hydrotherapy jets. He marketed it to the world as the first whirlpool bath and named it “Roman.” His patented jets produced a unique mix of 50/50 air to water ratio, the same ratio used in Jacuzzi hot tubs today – you will not find it anywhere else. There was born a new industry.
The 1970’s: The 1970’s saw the birth of larger hot tub to accommodate all of the family. For the first time, they incorporated heating and filtration systems to keep the water warm and clean. For the first time in modern history, anyone could indulge in a relaxing and invigorating spa treatment with family and friends in their own home.i
The 1980’s: During the 80’s, Jacuzzi focused on enhancing the home spa experience by introducing models which worked as hot tubs, whirlpool baths or both. The new models could be installed outside or in. They incorporated soothing waterfalls, making the garden into a place to relax and entertain family and friends.
The 1990’s: The 1990’s Roy Jacuzzi was inducted into the National Kitchen & Bath Hall of Fame, recognised for his numerous contributions in innovation of hydrotherapy for home use. Jacuzzi hot tubs were now promoting the idea a garden hot tub could be used for entertaining alongside the BBQ. Consumer trends of energy saving, modern colour schemes and optional features were responded to and Jacuzzi haven’t looked back.
The 2000’s: Jacuzzi are the world’s largest manufacturer of acrylic spas. They own over 250 worldwide patents for advancements in pump systems, jet technology, air controls and product design. Their ongoing commitment to innovative product development ensures Jacuzzi’s leadership position in the industry and sets the standard for quality and value.
